A dealer's own 'multi-point inspection' is marketing; an independent mechanic spending an hour on a lift is leverage. They'll find leaks, worn suspension, deferred maintenance, and the stuff that doesn't show up on a clean history report.
Use this line, verbatim, with the salesperson: "I'm serious about this car. I'd like to take it to my mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection before we finalize anything." If they refuse or stall, that's your answer—walk. A dealer with nothing to hide will hand you the keys or arrange it. On a private-party sale, the same rule applies: no inspection, no deal.
Bring the inspection findings back to the table. A list of needed repairs—tires at 30%, rear brakes due, a weeping water pump—is real, documentable negotiating ammunition. "Your shop says it's perfect" is a feeling; "my mechanic found $1,400 in needed work" is a number.
Read the Maintenance Story, Not Just the Mileage
Mileage tells you how far a car has gone; maintenance records tell you how well it was cared for getting there. Ask for service history and look specifically for the road-trip-critical items: timing belt or chain service, coolant flushes, transmission fluid changes, and the most recent oil change. A 90,000-mile car with a documented timing belt replacement is a far safer family hauler than a 60,000-mile car with no records at all.
Pay special attention to the cooling and transmission systems if you're buying anything you'll load up and drive long distances in summer heat. Towing a few bikes or hauling a full family puts heat into the transmission and engine that a quick around-town life never did. If the records are thin, budget for a fluid-and-filter refresh before your first big trip—and factor that cost into your offer.
Test Drive Like You Mean It—Not Around the Block
The standard dealership test drive is a 10-minute right-turn loop designed to keep you charmed and uncommitted. Don't accept it. Ask to drive on the highway and get the car up to sustained 65–70 mph for at least 10 minutes. That's where overheating, transmission slip, alignment pull, and wind-and-road noise reveal themselves.
While you drive, turn the AC to max and listen—does it blow truly cold, and does the engine temperature stay steady? Try every seat-belt latch, every climate vent, the rear defroster, and the power outlets your kids' devices will live on. Turn the radio off for a few minutes and just listen for clunks over bumps and whines from the transmission. A car that's quiet and composed at highway speed with the AC fighting hard is a car that'll survive your summer.
Build a Small Reality Buffer Into the Deal
Even a great used car may need a couple hundred dollars of fresh fluids, wipers, or a tire before it's truly trip-ready. New cars dodge most of this, but they don't dodge a missing roadside kit. Either way, set aside a small buffer—I tell families to keep $300 to $500 in mind—and don't let a salesperson tell you a car is "100% ready" to wave you off your own inspection.
