The Real Cost of "Out-The-Door Pricing" โ and How to Get It Right
Most buyers think OTD price is just MSRP plus tax. It's not. Here's what actually goes into your final number, and what the dealer hopes you'll miss.
I spent 25+ years inside dealerships, and "what's the out-the-door price?" was the question we trained sales teams to dance around. Not because we were villains โ because the OTD number is the only one that matters, and dealerships work hard to keep your attention on monthly payment instead.
What "Out-The-Door" Really Includes
Selling price (after rebates and incentives), sales tax, title and registration fees, the doc fee, and any dealer-installed accessories. That's it. Anything beyond that โ paint protection, theft etch, "market adjustments" โ is optional.
The Three Words to Use
"OTD price including all fees, taxes, and add-ons." Email it. Get it in writing. If the dealer can't produce it in 24 hours, that tells you everything.
Why Most Buyers Get the Number Wrong
They negotiate the monthly payment first. Once you anchor on $650/mo, the dealer can hit that number with a longer term, a higher rate, or by hiding fees in the trade. Lock the OTD price first. Always.
If you want Ashley to send you the real OTD number for a specific vehicle, send the year/make/model/trim and your ZIP code through the form on the OTD page โ you'll get the answer back, no dealership trip required.
