EV vs. Gas in 2026: The Ownership Costs Buyers Forget to Add Up
The sticker price and the gas-vs-electricity gap are only half the story. Here are the ownership costs on both sides that quietly decide which car is actually cheaper to live with.
I spent 25 years inside dealerships, and I watched the EV-versus-gas conversation get flattened into one lazy comparison: 'You'll save a fortune on gas.' Sometimes that's true. Sometimes it isn't even close. The problem is that buyers—and the salespeople selling them—usually compare the two things that are easy to compare (the monthly payment and the fuel bill) and skip the four or five costs that actually swing the math by thousands over five years. Let's slow down and add up the whole picture, both sides, so you're deciding with real numbers instead of a talking point.
Start With the Real Purchase Gap, Not the Ad Price
The first mistake is comparing a base gas trim to a loaded EV trim, or vice versa. Match them fairly: similar size, similar equipment, similar year. Then work down to out-the-door price on both, because fees and add-ons don't care what powers the car. Once you have two honest OTD numbers, apply any EV incentives you actually qualify for—state rebates, utility credits, or a manufacturer lease deal—because those can shrink the gap fast or leave it wide open depending on where you live.
One number people forget entirely: financing. EVs and gas cars can carry different manufacturer rates in the same month. A gas model on 0% for 60 months versus an EV at 6.9% can quietly erase a fuel-savings advantage before you've driven a mile. Run both loans out to their real total-interest cost and put that side by side with the price gap. That's your true starting spread.
Fuel and 'Fuel': Model Your Actual Life, Not the Average
The electricity-versus-gas comparison is real, but it's wildly personal. If you charge at home overnight on a low off-peak rate and drive a lot, the EV can win big. If you rely on public fast chargers—which often cost two to four times your home rate—or you drive very few miles, the advantage narrows or disappears. Take your real annual mileage, your local electricity rate, and your local gas price, and build the comparison on your inputs, not a national headline.
One thing I ask every buyer considering an EV: where will you charge, honestly, on a normal Tuesday? If the answer involves a Level 1 wall outlet and a long commute, or a home charger install you haven't priced yet, that install (often several hundred to a couple thousand dollars) belongs in the ownership math. It's a one-time cost, but it's a real one.
The Costs That Quietly Flip the Math
Insurance is the big one people skip. EVs frequently cost more to insure than a comparable gas car, partly because repairs run higher and total-loss thresholds hit differently. Before you buy either car, get a real quote on both from your own insurer. A difference of $30 to $80 a month is common enough that it can eat a chunk of your fuel savings—and you'll never see it at the desk.
Maintenance leans the EV's way: no oil changes, fewer moving parts, less brake wear thanks to regen. That's a genuine edge over years of ownership. But tires can offset part of it—EVs are heavy and torquey, and some chew through tires faster, especially in performance trims. And on the gas side, don't forget the routine stuff—oil services, brakes, belts—that adds up predictably. Give each car credit for what it actually does well instead of trusting a slogan.
Then there's registration and local fees. Some states charge EVs an extra annual fee to make up for lost fuel taxes, and it varies a lot by state. It won't break the deal, but it belongs in the column. I won't wade into tax specifics—that's a question for your tax pro—but know these line items exist and ask about them for your state.
Resale and Depreciation: The Biggest Number Nobody Puts on the Sheet
Here's the cost that dwarfs fuel and maintenance combined for most people: depreciation. What the car is worth when you leave it matters more than almost anything else, and EV resale has been a moving target. Some models hold value well; others drop hard as newer battery tech and range arrive. Gas resale is more predictable but not automatically better. Before you commit, look at three-to-five-year-old versions of both cars you're weighing and see what they actually sell for today. That real-world gap is your best clue to future depreciation.
Battery health is the EV wrinkle here. Buyers worry about replacement cost, and while it's rarely something you'll pay out of pocket within a normal warranty window, perceived battery uncertainty can soften resale. If you plan to keep the car well past the battery warranty, factor that in. If you trade every three or four years, it matters far less than depreciation on either powertrain.
Put It All in One Five-Year Table
Here's the framework I use: build two columns, EV and gas. In each, add up total price paid (OTD minus incentives), total loan interest, five years of fuel or electricity at your real usage, five years of insurance, five years of maintenance and tires, any charging install, any EV registration fee—then subtract your estimated resale value at year five. The bottom line is the true cost to own, and it's usually a very different ranking than the payment alone suggested.
Do this and you'll often find one of three outcomes: the EV wins clearly (high mileage, cheap home charging, strong resale trim), the gas car wins clearly (low mileage, public charging, pricey EV insurance), or it's close enough that you should just buy the car you like driving. All three are fine answers—the point is that you got there with math instead of a sales line.
